Welcome Back Students!  We hope your Spring Break holiday was enjoyable.  Here’s what’s going on with us:

Gridiron Bash

Louisiana State University is participating in the inaugural Gridiron Bash, a nationwide Ultimate Fan Competition to kick off the 2008 football season.

LSU is competing with several Division I schools across the country for a share of $1,750,000 to be put toward general scholarship funds.  The top three schools in the competition will receive prizes.

Performance in the competition is based on two parts:  concert attendance and vote tallies.  Each school will host concerts with high-profile performers.  LSU will host Kid Rock and country sensation Sara Evans live at Tiger Stadium on April 4.  The show will begin at 8:30 p.m.  Tickets are $38 and can be purchased at www.gridironbash.com, www.lsusports.net, or by calling 225-578-2184.

You can also vote for LSU to win the scholarship money by voting online at www.gridironbash.com or texting the phrase “LSU” to the number 23909.

Concert attendance is worth 70% of the total point scores, and votes submitted online or texted are worth 30%.

LSU is competing with rivals like the University of Alabama and the University of South Carolina, as well as Penn State University and Ohio State University.  LSU needs your support to compete!

Gridiron Bash is co-sponsored by USA Today, Athlon Sports, Tickets.com, Fans Poll and MSL Sports and Entertainment.  For more information, visit www.gridironbash.com.

TigerTV Election Debate

Tiger TV will be making history on Monday March 31, 2008. For the first time in LSU history, Tiger TV and LSU Student Government will partner together to host a LIVE televised debate for the positions of SG President and Vice President.

The debate will be televised live on Tiger TV, campus channel 75, starting at 7:00 p.m. The Holiday Forum in the Journalism Building will be open for the LSU community to watch and participate in the debate. Students are encouraged to submit questions to the debate email account at tigertvsgdebate@gmail.com. Questions will be read live on the air during the debate.

This is a big step for Tiger TV by showing it has the capabilities to produce a live interactive program with remote locations. Whether you’re affiliated with a campaign or just interested in voicing your opinion, please come out to the Journalism Building and show your support for Tiger TV and your University!

Ole Miss Rivalry Game Suggestions

The rivalry that exists between LSU and Ole Miss has been as fierce as any in the country, marked by highlights like Billy Cannon's game-winning 89-yard punt return in 1959 and Dwayne Bowe's game-tying touchdown catch in 2006.

Soon, the rivalry will become official, and the Southeastern Conference foes will have additional incentive to leave their best stuff on the field. Beginning next season, the Ole Miss Rebels and the LSU Tigers will participate in an official rivalry game.  The Tigers will host the first edition of the rivalry game on Saturday, Nov. 22 in Tiger Stadium.

In a joint effort between the Student Governments at LSU and Ole Miss, the idea for the rivalry concept will be tossed up to the student body.  Student fans can brainstorm ideas for the prize the winner will receive.  The game will be similar to the Battle for the Tiger Rag with the Tulane Green Wave or the Battle for the Golden Boot with the Arkansas Razorbacks.  In effect, the name of the prize will also become the name of the game.

You can text your suggestions for this revamped rivalry to 225-993-8842, or use the online suggestion box here.

Suggestions will be received through March 28.

Safety Week 2008

In the wake of a recent string of incidents at college campuses across the country, the importance of increasing safety awareness among college students, faculty and staff is dire. Louisiana State University is answering the call. This week, several campus departments are joining together to sponsor Public Safety Week, with a variety of events designed to generate discussion of important safety issues and provide solutions to any concerns voiced about those issues.

• Safety Week kicks off Monday evening at 7 p.m. when LSU hosts the Intercollegiate Safety Forum in the Journalism Building. The forum will include student representation from LSU and Louisiana Technical College – both of which have recently experienced tragic violent incidents on their campuses – as well as representatives from Southern University and Baton Rouge Community College. LSU Police Department and the Department of Public Safety will also be represented, as will the office of Baton Rouge Mayor-President Kip Holden.

• Tuesday is Spring Break Safety Day. With the week-long holiday approaching, students should be aware of ways they can stay safe while on vacation. Representatives of Students on Target (SOT) will be in Free Speech Alley to distribute information and speak with students about Spring Break safety tips, and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) will either have representatives on hand or will provide material for distribution.

• On Wednesday, the long arm of the law will reach out to Tower Drive and Free Speech Alley as the Department of Public Safety and the LSU Police Department hold a day-long exposition. Activities for the day include motorcycle exhibitions, canine unit demonstrations and mobile registration stations for the University’s emergency text message system, ClearTXT.

• On Thursday, the Student Health Center will have mental health-related programs and materials in Free Speech Alley during the day. The Kappa Delta Sorority house will host Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) classes at 7 p.m. All female students are invited to attend these classes.

• The anticipated LSU student attendance on Friday, March 14 is relatively low with Spring Break beginning on the weekend, so no major events are scheduled. Student Government volunteers will be in Free Speech Alley to hand out informative material to students. Public Safety Week is a collaborative effort of LSU Student Government, Public Affairs, LSUPD, Public Safety, Residential Life and other departments.
